What Nicotine Level is Right for Me?

One of the most common questions asked by new vapers is “how much nicotine should I use?”, and with good reason! Starting out with the appropriate nicotine level for you is arguably the most important factor in whether you’ll be able to stick to vaping.

Those just getting into vaping will often attempt to match levels of nicotine in e-liquid to nicotine in other products they may use. However, this is a misguided comparison, since nicotine in e-liquid is measured and responds differently than other nicotine products.

In e-liquid, nicotine levels are determined by the percentage of pure nicotine compared to the total volume of e-liquid per milliliter. For instance, e-liquid listed as 3mg would contain a total of 0.3% pure nicotine in each millilitre of e-liquid.

Some other nicotine products may not have the amount of nicotine listed, and some have the total amount of nicotine listed (e.g., NRT products that release slowly throughout the day). This can make comparisons to e-liquid difficult, if not impossible.

Different types of e-cigarette devices and types of nicotine used in the e-liquid will also contribute to the nicotine level that would be best for you. Mouth to lung e-cigarettes can be used with higher concentration of nicotine because they produce less vapour overall, so a smaller amount of nicotine is present in each puff as compared to direct to lung e-cigarettes that produce more vapour. Similarly, e-liquid containing nicotine salt can be used at higher levels than e-liquid containing freebase nicotine because of its smoothness. So ultimately, your choice of device and the type of nicotine e-liquid you want to use will make a big difference in terms of which nicotine level is most suitable for you.
